Whether you’ve driven past on the way to Hahndorf and wondered what it’s like to play, or you’re actively looking for an 18-hole course within easy reach of Adelaide, Aston Hills Golf Club is worth moving to the top of your list. Nestled in the heart of the Adelaide Hills at Mount Barker – just 35 minutes from the CBD – it’s one of South Australia’s most enjoyable visitor experiences.
This guide covers everything you need to know before you book: green fees, tee time bookings, cart hire, what to bring, and what to expect when you arrive.
About the Course
Aston Hills is an 18-hole, par 70 course with a friendly layout that suits all skill levels. The fairways are gently undulating – making it genuinely easy to walk – and the combination of strategically placed ponds, creek crossings, and well-positioned bunkers keeps things interesting without being punishing.
The course is lined with iconic South Australian gum trees, and it’s not unusual to spot kangaroos grazing near the fairways as you play. That kind of setting is hard to find this close to a capital city.

Monday to Friday: 7:00am – 5:00pm
Saturday & Sunday: 7:00am – 6:00pm
We recommend booking at least a day ahead, particularly for weekend mornings which tend to fill up quickly – especially between late autumn and spring when the Adelaide Hills is at its most beautiful for a round.
Golf Cart Hire
Electric golf carts are available for hire at Aston Hills. Cart hire is booked through the Pro Shop at the time of your tee time booking – carts cannot be reserved separately from a round.
If you’d prefer to walk, the course is well-suited to it. The terrain is gently undulating and most players manage the full 18 holes comfortably on foot. Trolleys are also available.
Practice Facilities
Aston Hills has a dedicated practice area available to visitors, which includes:
- A practice fairway for shots up to 180 metres
- A chipping green
- A practice putting green
| Note on Range Balls: Range balls for the practice fairway must be purchased from the Pro Shop before use. The practice area is a great way to warm up before your round or work on specific areas of your game after. |
It’s worth arriving 10–20 minutes before your tee time to use the practice green and settle in – particularly if you haven’t played the course before.
What to Wear: Dress Code
Aston Hills has a dress code in line with most traditional golf clubs. The key requirements for visitors are:
- Collared shirts – golf shirts or polo shirts are appropriate. T-shirts and sleeveless tops are not permitted.
- Appropriate golf trousers, shorts, or skirts. Denim is not permitted on the course.
- Golf shoes or appropriate sporting shoes that won’t damage the turf. Metal spikes are not permitted.
- Caps and hats are welcome on the course.
The club staff and Club Professional reserve the right to refuse entry to players who do not meet the dress requirements. If you’re unsure, a safe rule of thumb is: if you’d wear it at a business casual event, you’re likely fine on the course.
Food & Drinks at the Clubhouse
One of the genuine pleasures of a day at Aston Hills is finishing your round at the Clubhouse. The fully licensed bistro is open to the public – no membership required – and offers sweeping 180-degree views over the course.
- Clubhouse bar: Open 7 days, 10am – 6pm
- Breakfast and lunch: Tuesday to Sunday, 10:30am – 3:30pm
- Friday dinners: available on Friday evenings 5pm – 8pm
- Fully licensed bar with a selection of local Adelaide Hills wines, beers and spirits
The Clubhouse deck is a genuinely lovely place to debrief after a round — particularly on a clear day when the views across the Hills are at their best. It’s also open to non-golfers, so if you’re bringing someone who’d prefer not to play, they’re more than welcome to wait and enjoy a meal.
A Few Things to Know Before You Go
To make your visit as smooth as possible, here are the practical details that visitors often ask about:
- Alcohol: BYO is not permitted. The Clubhouse sells alcohol that may be consumed both inside and on the course, but no external alcohol is allowed on the premises.
- Guest responsibility: Visitors are responsible for any damage to the course, carts, or facilities during their round.
- Public liability: Aston Hills recommends visitors carry their own public liability insurance. The club does not cover player claims or losses.
- Golf club hire: Hire clubs are available through the Pro Shop. Contact us ahead of your visit if you’d like to arrange this.
- Wildlife: Kangaroos are a common and welcome sight on the fairways. Give them space and enjoy the moment – they’re part of what makes this course special.
